A Doggy First Aid Kit

The following are suggested items that you might like to include in a special first aid kit for your pet (or include them in your own first aid kit). If these items are packed in a suitable waterproof container, the kit could be taken along on hikes in the hills, on camping trips, or while practicing tracking or field work. Customize your kit to suit your purposes.

1 ea. White tape 1" width

1 ea. Vetwrap 2" width

1 ea. Vetwrap 4" width

1 ea. Elastoplast Bandage 2" width

1 pair of disposable gloves (available at most pharmacies)

1 tube Hibitaine Ointment (or V-Sporin H.C., or Panalog)(wound management)

1 Bottle of Eye Drops (V-Sporin Opth., Artificial Tears or other)

2 ea. Gauze wrap 2" width (can also be used to muzzle an injured dog)

1 ea. Gauze wrap 4" width

1 ea. Nonstretch Gauze 2" width

2 ea. Telfa Dressing 3 X 8"

25 Gauze Squares 2 X 2"

25 Gauze Squares 3 X 3"

1 ea. Practical Cotton 10" Square

10 ea. Q-Tip Swabs

1 pr Scissors

5 ea. Silver Nitrate Sticks (cauterize bleeding toe nails) (Or a small container of Quikstop)

A small bottle of Hibitaine Skin Cleanser (wound management)

1 Rectal thermometer

A tablespoon or Syringe (minus the needle) for administering liquid medications

Kaopectate or another stomach/anti-diarrheal remedy

1 pr of tweezers

A supply of the dog's regular medication (if it is on any)

Topical Medication for insect bites (Benadryl cream or other to relieve the itch or sting)

Needle-nose pliers (for removing porcupine quills or fish hooks)

Sml bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide (to remove organic matter from wounds)

Vaseline (to lubricate the rectal thermometer)

Add any other items that you might find useful depending upon the needs of your pet:

eg. a sponge, epinephrine (adrenalin) injection for dogs with severe allergies (ask your vet to demonstrate its use to you before you need it), antihistamine tablets, anti nausea medication, a remedy for hot spots, etc.
